Nenju Porukkudhillaiye...

I saw two things this weekend which prompted me to write this blog...

The first one was the movie, A Wednesday. If any of you want to see the movie, let me warn you that I may give away the story line. So proceed at your own risk!

Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and Jimmy Shergill, the movie was extremely well scripted with a very powerful plot and the actors did a great job in drving home the point. Artistically speaking, the movie didn't offer much (cinematography, music wasn't particularly great). But the theme connects with the minds of the majority and the powerful portrayal by the veteran actors added to its success.

The whole episode occurs on one Wednesday evening and has no record of it anywhere except the narrator's(Anupam Kher) mind. The story is set in Bombay and the several bomb blasts that have occurred in the past is the central theme of the story. Naseeruddin Shah plays the role of this guy who has planted bombs all around the city (one of the places being a Police Station opposite the Commissioner's office!) and then calls up the Commissioner(Anupam Kher) with a set of demands. I won't go into the details as to how Naseeruddin Shah's call was untraceable, which was technically convincing. Anyways, the main demand of Naseeruddin Shah is the release of four captured terrorists belonging to various terrorist organizations. The cops have no choice but to yield to his demands. He asks the commisioner to send the four guys,  accompanied only by two officers, to a new private airstrip. Naseeruddin Shah instructs the officers to just leave the four people on a bench near the airstrip and to go away without looking back. But one of the officers, Arif Khan (Jimmy Shergill), feels that something is wrong and in the last minute decides to leave only 3 people on the bench and takes the other one away with him. The bench then explodes killing the three terrorists and everyone is taken by surprise!

This is when Naseeruddin Shah tells the motive behind the entire operation. He calls himself the common man and says that he is just cleaning is house(Bombay) killing pests like cockroaches. He says that he is doing all this because he is sick of being afraid to travel in trains, in buses, going to public places. The government, police and all the intelligence are not able to do anything to stop the terrorist activities. Even if they do catch some of the terrorists, it is not long before someone else comes and creates havoc and demands the release of the captured terrorists as ransom. The common man is aggrieved by all these and is pissed with the fact that someone else is deciding when he should die. So his solution to the problem is to simply wipe out the terrorists once they are captured. So the police agree to his point of view, kills the fourth guy too and the case is never goes on file. The Commissioner doesn't even tell the name of that common man, because his name would reveal his religion and the whole thing would be misconstrued (Nice touch there!)

This movie raises the major question, Is the Common Man (capitals to denote the character portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah) justified in his actions? The Common Man's line of reasoning goes like this - "if I, a common man, could get 6 kgs of RDX and place the bomb right opposite the Commissioner's office in a police station, how much more will an organization be able to do? Why should I believe in the efficiency of the police? You have caught these four terrorists and they are in your custody, but you could do nothing but yield to my demands to release them. You have so much evidence but you still can't punish them in court. (There is a scene in which the terrorists, themselves, say with pride that they were involved in 1993, 2006 and so on). When there was nothing you could do when thousands of people were dying, why should you feel bad when I try to kill these four people?"

Forgive my writing skills - when Naseeruddin Shah said these on screen he was a lot more convincing than I was in the previous paragraph! :-) I do not personally agree with his line of reasoning or killing the terrorists the way he did, but the way the Common Man was portrayed, his anger was entirely justified. In fact, that is what I felt at the end of the movie - anger!

Right after watching this movie, I saw the Big Fight hosted on NDTV . The topic of the debate was "Does Indian culture need moral policing?" and there were many questions about whether pub culture is acceptable in India. I was pained by the fact that an organisation (which shared my name!)  thought it was its duty to stop women from going to pubs. So how do they go about doing it? - Simple! Walk into a pub, pull out all the girls by their hair, slap them and molest them! That is probably the most decent thing to do, I guess!

Days earlier, I was shocked when I heard this news and was wondering who the hell these people were to think it was their duty to uphold the Indian culture. By the way, what is Indian culture? If women going to pubs is against Indian culture, then why weren't any of the men in pub abused? Does this mean, Indian culture allows men to go to pubs while women can't?? I thought that was a logic simple enough for even those pea-brained activists to come up with!

But in the Big Fight episode, there was this guy from Sri Ram Sena, who was trying to justify the actions of the group, by saying the whole idea of pubs,  which disrupts the Indian culture, also proves to be a danger to the society. He was talking about how an alcoholic affects the society (driving under influence and stuff like that). But that has got nothing to do with pubs! Consumption of liquor in India, did not start 10 or 20 years ago. It has been there for ages! He also says, pubs didn't exist a hundred years before - so it is not a part of Indian culture and therefore we should eliminate it!

I would like to see him to counter this argument of mine. Drunk driving has caused a lot of deaths in our country and poses a huge threat to community safety. Alcoholic drinks have always been there in our country, but over the past few years we have been using too many powered vehicles. 100 years back, India did not have powered vehicles on the road, so cars are not part of our culture. So we should eliminate all motor vehicles for public safety and to uphold our cultural values.

In India, all pubs have age restrictions - "people under the age of 21 years are not allowed inside". I guess 21 years is old enough for a person to decide what he/she wants to do. I do not understand why people always think that young people do not have enough responsibilty and they should always be policed!

This is what I felt at the end of the Big Fight episode - anger and pain!

(I was boiling with rage when I first started writing this, but couldn't finish writing this on that day. So it might have come out less angry than I felt that day :-) )

  1. good thoughts. now you have me interested in watching Wednesday. really. The moment I saw the star cast, I knew it is worth watching. But the story line (yes you did give away) is compelling. I don't like surprises and hence now I can watch the movie with a clear conscience :D

    cheers,
    k

  2. Welcome to India...!!! Contradiction Country of Extremes... Anything is possible in India...!!! I am not trying to delude our country... I am proud to be an Indian... but this is how India is... Cant do much on this i guess... And the news channels... why should someone from that stupid organization be called on the first hand... u know very well they are idiots... Every news channel whatever little opportunity they get they try to sensationalize the same... i would like to quote one most idiotic instance which i was shocked to core... when Rahman got nominated for Oscar... there was a debate in Times Now... Since it was about Rahman i was very keen to see the same.... and ultimately the debate was more on how Dany had shown India badly and how westerners are trying to earn money and fame by showing India Badly... this is how the news channels are... anyways coming back to our point.... I have got just one thing to say on this as of now... every bloody politician know what is happening is wrong... but no one is ready to prevent such acts... Every bloody politician is interested in Divide and Rule policy and blame game... To begin with if Rules are stringent on such things then this could be avoided... if rules need to be stringent... the people framing the rules need to be proper... i dont expect the same to happen in near future too.. unless the whole breed of politicians are changed... this from the angle of solving... and i m not even interested in talking about the stupid organization or its members... Democracy to Indians seems to be wrong at times...

  3. @ octotus : yes, it is a really nice movie. I liked the way they just stuck to story. No unnecessary songs or unwanted characters. But may be I'm hyping it up a bit too much. And I read your blog too. I can relate to your tone, as I felt very much the same.

@ karthikeyamurthy : I totally agree with you on the news channels. In the movie too, they have had a good shot at all these 24x7 news channels. (another reason why I liked the movie! :-) )
And regarding SDM, the whole concept is stupid. Haven't we ourselves showed the ugly parts of bombay in our own movies? what about movies like naayakan and all? So why complain when someone else does it? It is not as if it doesn't exist. And anyways, why do we care a rat's ass what some bloody foreigner thinks of our country.

  4. A Wednesday is one of the best movies I've watched recently. Try and watch Aamir. That's wonderful too - it moved me to tears.

And as for the Sriram Sena...well, what they did was disgusting. Absolutely. And why does this silly sena target women alone? So it's ok if men drink?

However, it is interesting that the NCW member who went to Mangalore for an enquiry found that the pub didnt have a license to serve liquor in the first place. Whatever.

What I don't understand is, why the media expects the BJP to explain every such act by "a Hindu organization".

And they let these Congress guys go on and on on their shows...I mean, look at Maharashtra - What have they done about Raj Thakrey? In my humble opinion, it is much worse to beat up poor taxi drivers and pani puri sellers who are trying to make ends meet, than to beat up privileged kids in pubs. I know, I know, I sound like a communist...but I honestly dont mean to :D

  5. @ Madhu : Sure, I'll try to get hold of that movie. Thanks. :-)

I also agree with you on the point that BJP is not answerable for all the organizations that claim to be 'Hindu'. And about Congress, the less said, the better!
I refrained from going into the religious line of thought, because I can't accept that this dumb organization is doing it in the name of my religion. I hate it because, I love my religion and I feel that women are to be treated with utmost respect according to the tenets of my religion. So it is ridiculous to even think that this 'Sena' is trying to uphold the traditions and values of Hinduism.

  8. Today I wanted to be really early to office to complete the overloaded work. And I am very much in office by 7:45 to begin my routine but more than the work now what seems to be important to me is this (writing in your blog).

I was really happy when I got up today morning after watching India winning the match yesterday with ease. Got up early took the pain to go down and get a news paper before others could take it, so that I get to read every article on India's win. But ultimately ended up closing the news paper after reading the article in the FrontPage which totally changed my mood and actually put me back into the way as I was during the reservation issue. The article was on "SRIRAM SENA" and their plans for the romantic dating on Valentine’s Day...!!!

Sriram Sena Says as I quote "Our Organization will be hiring lot of priests and will be getting mangal sutra for this Valentines Day. Our members across the state on seeing any couple dating on Valentine's Day will take them to the nearest temple and forcibly marry them. If the couple does not accept for the same, the girl will be forced to tie a rakhi to the guy." I don't remember in the nearest and longest past reading such an absurd statement in my life.

Government's Response for the same "Let them commit something like that then Law will take its own course..."???????????

I also don't remember reading such a response from the government for any issue. I am probably planning to go and forcibly marry the minister's daughter who said this... then let law take its own course... but of course, how it is going to be for me having the minister daughter as my wife is a big question... I will decide on that after seeing that girl... if I m not ok with marrying her daughter, and then probably do something else that is possible in that situation and then I will let law take its own course.

What the hell!!! What is their problem and why the hell is the government like this...???

I wish I get a time machine to take these idiots to the Stone Age and dump these idiots there. How is this ruining our culture? Who said Hinduism says that there are different ways of living according to the sex of a person? Isn’t this just an expression of love? Who are these people to say that you cannot express your love? Even if it is running the culture who are these as***** to say that? What rights do they have to enter into the life of others? Why don’t they allow people to live their life the way they want?

En da ippadi…??? Anything with the name “SRIRAM” always remains controversial I guess... including the “Lord SRIRAM” who made his wife Sita to do Agni Pariksha...!!!

SRIRAMANAI POLA IRRUKU VENDUM ENDRU SOLVADHUNDU…
AANAL RAVANARAGAL THANNAI RAMAN ENDRU ENNINAL
EN SEIVAN RAMA… Nenjam Porukudhillaiye Indha Nilai Ketta Mandharai Ninaindhuvital......... :(

P.S. I was more interested in the second part of your posting may be because I haven’t seen that movie yet. If I get an opportunity to watch the movie I will try and comment on that too.

@ Madhu and VS: I don't agree with the point that BJP is not answerable after reading this article and the minister's response
